Gulf Weekly Historic win in the wind

THE winds of change were blowing in Bahrain on Saturday. Not only did they bring plenty of sand to result in poor visibility at the Awali Golf Club (AWC) but a change of hands for the Crown Prince Cup … after the home team took the prize from Bahrain Golf Club (BGC) after more than a quarter of a century trying.

The contest has been played between the rival sand course clubs since 1962 with the location of the competition alternating from year to year.

The match-play format saw The A Team (handicaps up to 10) played from the championship tees off scratch, while the B Team (handicaps 11 and above) played from the regular tees using handicap differentials. The foursomes were made up of teams of two members representing each club.

Dusty and windy conditions witnessed AGC taking the honours after an epic play-off. Jubilant vice-captain Serwin Kollner-Rampersad was quickly on social media celebrating the victory, posting: “Yes, we did it. History is made – after 26 years we beat BGC. You all did great!”

A closely contested A Team competition resulted in the teams tying at 3-3. While it was a team event, a sudden death play-off in failing light found Ali Mohammed Al Kowari sinking the winning putt for Awali on the 18th hole. The B Team saw BGC taking the honours with 3½ points to AGC’s 2½ points.

The presentation of the trophy and prizes were followed by a hearty celebration with the AGC stalwarts marking the historic win in a befitting manner.

BGC’s took the surprise defeat in stoic fashion with captain Khalid Al Aathem praising the hosts although there was a steely determination in the car park among the nationals to reclaim the coveted crown next time round when they play on home territory near Riffa Fort.
