Psychological thriller series We Were Liars premieres on Amazon Prime Video on June 18.
Based on the 2014 novel by E Lockheart, the show tells the story of Cady Sinclair (Emily Alyn Lind), a 17-year-old girl from a wealthy family who spends her summers on a private island.
After suffering a terrible accident, Cady struggles to remember events that happened in her past, and returns to her family’s summer home determined to remember the details. As the pieces come together, she realises a shocking revelation about herself.
In an interview, show developer Julie Plec, who is best known for her work on teen drama series The Vampire Diaries, indicated that there were already hopes for a second season of We Were Liars.
“I think fans of the book are going to be very, very happy, because I think we hit all the marks and all the beats that the book does, and then also expand the universe,” she said.
“Layers upon layers upon layers to really make the adult characters really nuanced and multi layered, and to set the stage for season two, which theoretically is going to take us deeper into the moms’ lives as well and add another generation to the story,” she added.
The critically acclaimed adapted material earned the 2014 Goodreads Choice Award for best young adult fiction. It was also listed on the American Library Association’s top 10 best fiction for young adults for 2015.
