Young must refrain from drinking

Last week I touched upon the taboo topic of under-aged sex and sex education.

This time I will concentrate on under-aged drinking. I am not talking of this issue in relation to what happens in places in the West, but in this little kingdom that we call Bahrain.

It has been happening for quite some time now. I have witnessed some of my friends getting either drunk or recovering from a hangover the next morning.

The excuses many of them make are quite hilarious to be honest.

Some blame their busy academic and social lives for drinking alcohol until they pass out. Another poor excuse is that as religious people who have strayed away from praying five times a day or fasting during Ramadan, the consequences of their drinking actions will be judged the same way.

It is indeed a sad thing that in our community some have reached this far away from our traditional values and ethics that those as young as 14 decide to drink at whenever time they choose to.

One can blame the fact that many bouncers at night clubs in Bahrain allow the entrance of under-aged people just because they are capable of slipping in a BD5 tip on the way in.

One must remember that there is no way out when the booze hits you and you lose your senses.

Why am I touching upon this topic? Well, because it is an issue that I believe has have been kept quiet for a long time now and enough is enough when the innocence of childhood experimentation has taken us to lengths where it has never been stretched before.

All I have to say is one must be aware and that young people should not resort to really stupid reasoning that it is OK to act in such an unsuitable way, when really it is not.
