American Mission Hospital (AMH) is offering special packages during Breast Cancer Awareness month as part of its on-going community activities.

The hospital has been offering the promotion for the past 15 years and it is available at clinics in Saar and Amwaj Islands and the Manama hospital.

Dr Sanjay Gupta, clinical administrative head of surgical services lines, said: "During the month of October we roll out packages that include mammogram and ultrasound. The patient phones in and makes an appointment. After going over a brief history of her health, an ultrasound and mammogram is carried out. If needed, a consultation with a physician can be arranged.

"Almost every year, the number of women making use of this offer keeps increasing. This year we have at least eight patients per day. On the average we will get about 150 patients during the month."

Women over the age of 40 are urged to get checked as early detection offers the best chance of successful treatment. "The patient can also undergo less intensive treatment," added Dr Sanjay. "When detected early, patients can undergo breast conserving surgery and be breast cancer survivors.

"Breast cancer is more prevalent in women over 40. That does not mean that women under 40 cannot get the disease but the chances are higher after that age."

This year the hospital is offering a laboratory package which provides a complete blood count and includes checking blood sugar, calcium, Urea and Creatinine, electrolytes, CEA and CA 15-3.

Laboratory packages or blood tests data can also highlight the susceptibility of a patient getting breast cancer and can be used to monitor responses to treatment.

The laboratory package costs BD25 and the mammogram and ultrasound is priced at BD40. To book an appointment, contact 17248111 or visit www.amh.org.bh for details.
