Gulf Weekly Madonna and the fashion of adoption

So Madonna has jumped on the it’s-the-fashion-to-adopt-a-baby-from-a-developing-country bandwagon.

Going to Malawi with the worlds Press following at her heels, showing the world what a thoughtful, compassionate and caring woman she is.
Quite frankly I’m flabbergasted at the whole process. Although a few years ago it was the popular belief that if one had the means, the humanitarian thing to do was to give one of the millions of parentless children a home, everybody now knows that to do so is in fact quite a selfish act.
Giving one child a home doesn’t in any way go towards helping or solving the problem the much bigger problem. In many cases it means taking a child away from the only culture they have ever known, bringing them to a culture that is alien and often racist. If help is truly the aim here, it would be much more helpful to give the money to the upkeep of the child in their own familiar surroundings. It would be far better to sponsor a child’s upkeep and education and enable it to better the life they already have... Just a thought.
