I read in the papers this week that one of the councils has turned down an appeal to send money to Lebanon on the grounds that it can have no certainty that the money will indeed go were it needs to be.
To be fair, I think they were absolutely right. Donating money to charity is a vital part of trying to stamp out poverty and hunger all over the world but I can’t help thinking how many millions a year are wasted on unscrupulous people who collect money under false pretences.
I am not saying that would have been the case this time but the point I am trying to make is that if you are going to give up your hard earned cash, you have a right to know that it will really be going to those who truly need it.
I believe with all my heart that we all have a duty to help those less fortunate than ourselves but I also believe we have a duty to make sure that the help we give will truly be of help.
